The USRN Student Research Attachment is a new initiative designed to provide students of USRN member universities with opportunities to undertake research directed towards solving social and community problems, which is an endeavour that represents one of the efforts of the USRN.
Kyoto University accepted three students for this pilot programme in March 2019; one each from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Peking University and Simon Fraser University. The students’ academic interests include earthquakes, disasters and disaster recovery. The student participants were placed under the Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability* during their 1-month stay at Kyoto University and explored their fields of interests through Kyoto University’s resources, such as its facilities and faculty. In addition, the students participated in international conferences, such as the 4th Global Summit of Research Institutes for Disaster Risk Reduction, and visited the earthquake-hit areas of Kobe and Tohoku.
Kyoto University will continue to provide the research-based education programme to Network member universities as one of their USRN projects.
*The Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability was launched in Kyoto University during the 2013 academic year. The School aims to produce top-level global leaders with a strong sense of responsibility, humanity and morality who can resolve complex and diverse social issues.
