VU Amsterdam recently introduced the “Mixed Classroom Model” to USRN member institutions through a highly successful online workshop from 3 June to 8 July 2024. The six-week programme received positive feedback from 18 participants representing seven USRN member institutions: Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Ateneo de Manila University, Simon Fraser University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, University of Iceland, University of Pretoria, and Rhodes University.
The VU Mixed Classroom Educational Model is an educational approach that builds upon differences to enrich the learning experience for all students and staff. The initiative aims to promote inclusive education and social responsibility across USRN member institutions, fostering a socially responsible academic community.
Facilitated by experts Ana Clara Cassanti and Niels van Manen from VU Amsterdam, the online workshop utilised a blended learning approach, incorporating self-study and live online sessions. Participants were guided through the three phases of the model (Sensitizing, Engaging, and Optimizing), learning to address biases, identify identity markers, manage challenging situations, and design effective sessions based on the model’s principles.
The diverse group of participants, including teacher trainers, faculty members, and administrators, provided positive feedback on both the content and format of the workshop:
“One of the things, I appreciated the most was the opportunity to meet and interact with global colleagues and to learn with and from them. While the themes, concepts, and content weren’t new, the model was, and I appreciated the opportunities presented to engage with the material in a new way. I was able to notice nuanced differences and also similarities in approaches to valuing diversity and leveraging the assets that students bring to the classroom across disciplines.”
“The course is very useful in ensuring the diverse needs of students are accounted for. The blended format is helpful as the module contents are reinforced during the live session. This course is highly recommended to colleagues.”
The USRN extends its gratitude to VU Amsterdam’s leadership for organising such an inspiring and engaging workshop for our member institutions.
